MoSS was developed for the project “Voice as a Matter of Design: a Framework for Novel Vocal Imaginaries” at the IT-University in Copenhagen
MoSS is an innovative modular smart speaker that blurs the lines between art, technology, and play. Combining the functionality of a smart speaker with the experimental nature of a modular synthesizer, MoSS invites users to explore and manipulate synthetic voices in real-time, fostering creative engagement with voice technology.
The design of MoSS is both an aesthetic and functional departure from traditional smart speakers. Its transparent panels and exposed electronics create a visual narrative of openness and experimentation. Equipped with knobs, buttons, and patch cables, MoSS allows users to physically alter its vocal outputs, transforming the device into a playful instrument of sonic exploration. By integrating cloud-based technologies like Microsoft Azure, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, and Amazon Polly, MoSS pushes the boundaries of what voice synthesis can achieve, encouraging users to reimagine their relationship with voice-controlled technology.
